Yours is one situation in which there might be a point to buying the
*abridgement* of Wallace: "The Basics of NT Syntax." In most settings,
though it's supposedly "more manageable" for classroom purposes, the
abridged edition is a waste of money since it's inadequate for use beyond
the immediate class and students need to be told they must now buy the big
one. But you're right, textbook designers don't typically have Tokyo subways
in mind when they design books! :) Other good-quality, smaller intermediate
texts include Young, Porter, and Zerwick. Despite the traditional
endearment of D&M by some, I'd discourage you from reverting to it despite
it's handy size.
