I think "contend" is pretty good, that was its meaning in classical times as
well as 1st c. (in games contexts as well as attacking contexts) - "fight"
or "battle" are O.K., but not quite there - MM have 2 occurrences from the
inscriptions, one they don't trans., the other they translate as "vie".
