Thank you for the sympathies.  At least I think I am in a better 
position than John Brown was when he taught himself Greek while herding 
sheep. ;-)  (In my case, I'm like sheep being herded inside the train). 
  However, I still don't know why Hudson's book can be any better than 
Machen's (unless one thinks ignoring the accents is a better way).
