There is no default sense of BHMA, or any word for
that matter. And the meaning of BHMA would not bring
to mind a "tribunal" of a military or judicial
(secular) sense. And in fact, the same author of this
verse has already addressed this very issue in his
initial letter. Any attempt to make this some kind of
"judgment" in the secular sense of the word is
anachronistic.
The first thing you have to do is to ascertain the
many and varied reasons why people stood before the
various "BHMA" in Corinth. There is no reason to
default to a judicial (tribunal) sense unless one is
predisposed to such a view. One could just as easily
default to an "olympic" sense or a "religious" sense.
To assign to BHMA a secular sense is without warrant;
there are simply other alternatives that must first be
analyzed and afterwards eliminated based on authorial factors.
