A diphthong is a pair of vowels that "unite" to make a sound (or set
of sounds).  Two vowels can be together without being a diphthong. 
One example is in the word ABRAAM.  Granted, that's not a native
Greek word.  Another example is in the word LAOS.  (However, my
lexicon says that the A in LAOS is "long".)

Actually it's easier than you might think.  Say the words "I", "eye",
"aye".  (I'm assuming that you and I speak the same dialect of
English.  If not, no offense is intended.)
