Well . . . if you think about it, the sound of "I", "eye", etc. *is*
the same as ah-ee (with the h silent). It helps to say it
s-l-o-w-l-y.
Also, I need to clarify something. I said that the A in LAOS is
long. That does *not* mean the same thing in Greek as in English. A
Greek long vowel is long in terms of duration, not pronunciation.
That doesn't matter much to us, except in some poetry, where rhythm
is a major factor.
As to which lexicon indicated the long sound, it was a classical
lexicon (Pocket Oxford Classical Greek Dictionary).
And finally:
My comments are not to be confused with those of someone who knows
what he's talking about!
