So how can POIKILON get translated to all these other terms? Is the word
used in other senses the "mottled"? I am truly confused how other
translators would justify the diversity on this point.

Hello all,
In Genesis 37:3 in the King James we get the notion that Joseph was given a
"coat of mnay colors". But other translations give all sorts of other
readings. We have a coat with long sleeves, there is a coat that reaches
to the soles of the feet,, etc.
How is this verse rendered in the LXX and what is the strictest sense of
the phrasing.
________

Genesis 37:3 IAKWB DE HGAPA TON IWSHF PARA PANTAS TOUS hUIOUS AUTOU hOTI

(translation)
Genesis 37:3 Now Jacob loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was
to him the son of old age; and he made for him a tunic of many colors.

CITWN - tunic = a garment worn next to the skin, an undergarment, and by
both sexes
POIKILON = many-colored. as embroidered robes. Also spoken of animals
such
as spotted, mottled, pied, dappled, of leopards, fawns, etc.

here is an interlinear of LXX (PDF)
