This will be short indeed.  For a more detailed
discussion you might consult the luminaries on the
TC-list or find an OT commentary that touches on
textual issues, most have a breif chapter.  The
standard tale that I have heard is that the MT
represents the mainline of descent of the autograph
Hebrew text.  There were various types of text
circulating as revelaed by the Dead Sea Scrools but in
the early centuries of the current era the Massorites
selected and standardized a single Hebrew text as
canonical.  They added some marginal notes ans
maintained an extreemly high degree of textual
fidelity by such devices as counting the letters of
each book and double checking every copy.  The vowel
pointings which can help resolve ambiguity in the
consonantal text are also attributed to them.
