Thank you for alerting us to your article, Rod.
In the Sydney Morning Herald today, in a weekly question and answer section,
someone answered a question about how the gender of new words is decided in
languages which have it.

I thought readers would enjoy the witty answer:
If the new thing is curvy, the word is made feminine. If the new thing is
straight and angular, it is assigned masculine gender. If it is neither, the
prototype is destroyed and the creators are told to try again!
