Mitch:
After reading several responses, I think it should be
noted that Mounce is taking a different approach than
your Ancient Greek textbook approach. Your Ancient
Greek (Athenaze?) book has a goal of making the
students proficient in READING vasts amounts of Greek,
whereas Mounce's approach is more geared for analyzing
much smaller pieces of text. After completing Mounce's
courses, you will struggle with your general reading
ability; his approach focuses on ANALYZING "segments"
at a time, while Athenaze focuses on READING "volumes"
at a time. That is why GNT students typically cannot
sit down and read a good Greek book; rather, they will
sit down and analyze a passage in the New Testament,
being almost completely depended on Ancient Greek
researchers for the many nuances of words (and
syntactical options). The Mounce approach to me is
seriously lacking in this regard. Granted his
objective is BIBLICAL Greek, but he takes no pains to
prepare his students for serious study in the Greek of
the New Testament world (Hellenistic literature).
