<doug>
but is there really such a thing as 'core' value or meaning of a form or
lexis?

<con>
This is the way the term is being used in the Porter/Fanning/Olsen/Decker
aspect discussion. This usage of the term applies to verb forms, not
necessarily lexical items. I think most proponents in the discussion would
answer 'yes' to your question, though there may be more than one core value;
ie. Porter would say that the imperfect tense-form has imperfective aspect
AND remoteness as its core values.

'core' value of the form, rather than its entire range of meaning (which is
sometimes called 'semantic range' in other contexts).
