The digamma, the original "6", was falling into disuse during the time of 
authorship of the NT.  Many were using stigma (final sigma)  instead.
On a side note, some think that digamma instead of gamma originally 
appeared in Mark's account of the crucifixion -- where the time is 
indicated (sixth hour instead of third).  This has no direct  manuscript 
support, but it's a possibility.
