Matt. 5:13 & 14 come to my mind, where Jesus told the disciples:
HUMEIS ESTE TO HALAS and HUMEIS ESTE TO FOS, where in each case "You" is
plural and "salt" and "light" are singular.
I've been told that those from what we call the middle east have a different
paradigm when it comes to how they relate either as groups or individuals.
I'm not sure I'll say this quite right, but as I understood it, they
identify more as a member of their group, be it the family, tribe, nation,
or church, while those from the western culture tend more toward
individualism. Perhaps someone else in this group has a good understanding
of this and can comment.
I bring it up thinking that it may have some influence on the use of a
plural pronoun with a singular noun.
