There has been significant discussion on this question of the construction
of hOUTWS ... hWSTE in John 3:16. One of the more recent was in April 1-4
of 2000 with subject-header, 'hOUTWS Jn3.16 "In this way"' You may find it
useful to review that thread; suffice it to say, that on this issue, as on
quite a few others involving grammatical analysis of Biblical Greek
constructions, there is no consensus. Some have held that hOUTWS refers
backwards to descriptive aspects regarding God's love for the KOSMOS, while
others (myself included) believe that the more traditional view of hOUTWS
HGAPHSEN implying God's 'such great love" for the KOSMOS takes the hWSTE
clause as a result. I guess it amounts to two views: (1) "THAT's how god
loved the world, and so he sent ... "; (2) God loved the world to such an
extent that he sent ..."
