Dear Bart,
>Acts chapter 2 describes the events surrounding Pentacost, including the
>how foreign visitors heard the believers speak in the own languages. In
>Acts 2:9-11 a list of the places these foreigners were from is given. In
>verse 9 is listed "Asia". Given that otherwise very specific locales are
>given, this seems out of place as being a very broad terminology. Is
>there usage of this term elsewhere (in or out of the Bible) that would
>narrow down where was being referred to.
According to the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, "Asia" "in
different times and contexts could variously denote the continent, the
whole peninsula, or a much smaller area at its western seaboard." C. J.
Hemer, author of the article on Asia Minor, says that Asia Minor must be
"distinguished . . . from the "Asia" of the NT, which is normally to be
equated with the Roman administrative province often known as 'proconsular
Asia' in the West."
Yours,
Harold Holmyard
