Ron,
According to Bauer MASAOMAI is used since Aristophanes.
Liddell-Scott mentions several authors but adds "Not in Trag., or Att.
Prose". He gives as translation only "chew" but once "shoot out the lip, as
a mark of contempt".
So I see no problem concerning the meaning of this word.
You can find the word in the LXX: Job 30: 4.
