Erick Venden, who initiated this thread, emailed me privately to
indicate that he couldn't get to work the code which Wieland had quoted
from a post of mine some five years ago. When I followed the simple
instructions that I had written in the post quoted, I couldn't get it to
work either! The reason is fairly straight-forward: the beginning and
end points of some lines of the code weren't preserved, so that in
certain places the start of one line had been appended to the end of
another. It's critical that the original format be preserved. The
format was retained in the original post, which can still be seen at
http://lists.ibiblio.org/pipermail/b-greek/1999-July/006494.html.

Erick let me know that he's using the TekniaGreek font; the two
variations of the sorting routine that I provided were based on other
fonts which used different character mappings, so the code needs to be
emended a little. I will make the changes necessary and send it to
Erick directly, but if the emendation were of value to any other member,
could they let me know via the list and I'll post it here for future
reference.

The difficulties with different character mappings in the old fonts is
one of the reasons why Unicode is a vast improvement on the old style
fonts. It is possible to sort Unicode for our purposes, though - as
Rodney Decker pointed out - there are some complexities. I would be
interested to know if any other list members would find such routines
useful for work in Excel or for other purposes.

Our current discussion seems to come up from time to time; it was
raised under the subject header 'alphabeticizing' back in May 2000,
including a post of Joseph Weaks at
http://lists.ibiblio.org/pipermail/b-greek/2000-May/011537.html which
may be of interest to Mac users.

Some list members interested in the technical issues arising from our
studies may not know of the Biblical-languages mailing list; see
http://lists.ibiblio.org/mailman/listinfo/biblical-languages.
