Buy THE GREEK MEMORY SYSTEM Vocabulary flash cards:
http://home.regent.edu/lylesto/memsystem.html
J. Lyle Story sells them for $25 now, but you may find them for $20 still at some seminary bookstores; that's the price at Dallas Theological Seminary.
Some of the cards make more sense if you're using Story's textbook, GREEK TO ME, that they were designed to accompany. E.g., for the prepositions, you'll have to refer to the textbook for the helpful mnemonic pictures (which use the specific characters Story associates with each case - e.g., Nora Nominative, Demetrius Dative, etc.), as the flashcards only list the words without mnemonic helps. Also, since the cards accompany the textbook, you will have to re-sort them alphabetically, as they are sorted by the chapters in GREEK TO ME.
BUT ... after learning from Mounce, which gave me about a 320-word vocabulary (i.e., every word that occurs 50x or more), I bought these cards and nearly doubled my vocabulary (630 words or so - i.e., every word that occurs 25x or more) in a matter of weeks.
The picture-cards really help you retain the words, much better than simple word memorization.
Ideally you should then go on to learn all the words that occur 20x - 24x times, so you'll know every word that occurs 20x or more. That's what is expected for second-year Greek for Mounce's GRADED READER, and that's what Dan Wallace has his honor class students learn in first-year Greek. If you (and I, too!) could learn every word that occurs 10x or more, you'd be doing wonderfully!
