Might I suggest Josephus, Dio Chrysostrom, and Apostolic fathers as an
outside starting point? Vocabulary can be relatively painlessly
absorbed thru the LXX, though where the vocabulary learning curve is
nice it is not Greek syntax. There is enough in the above, plus other
1st century stuff, to make Plato and Xenophon relatively tame when you
want to pick them up.
