Seems like a pretty straightforward purpose clause to me. "Let us go  
on to the contestants that are nearest to us, so that we may cease  
from [speaking of] the ancient examples. Let us take noble examples  
from our own generation."

> this because of the way it is use in vs 3, set before
> "our eyes"). Was it used that way in the GNT?

The phrase LAMBANEIN UPODEIGMA means "take for example/as example"
