Ken Wilson,
Grammar is extremely important to know/understand, for the reading of Greek. Of course one must also have a good vocabulary of the language and use it with the grammar. So if one is reading an interlinear while understanding the grammar, I think that is progress. But at that point I believe that the interlinear is not needed. When I have tutored students I realized that emphasizing grammar has helped them in reading, because I see the result of other students that were not embracing the grammar. One step at a time. I believe that those who have jumped right to an interlinear to use as a learning aid have fallen way behind students that do embrace the grammar (I think this is why there are 2nd year Greek students that are still trying to understand Predicate/Attributive positioning of 3rd person personal pronouns for Reflection or Emphasis). But whatever aids in learning is exactly that...an aid. Therefore if it does not aid, I say avoid at all costs.
IMHO I also highly respect the opinions of scholars that know the subject well, and in my exposure I have not seen any scholars direct me or others to an interlinear.
Respectfully,
Eric Biggs,
