I discovered that reading the Greek NT everyday, making a list of words I
did not know, and then looking them up as I got time, worked very well. I
always highlighted definitions in the lexicon, and this way I knew right away if
I was looking things up more than once. Using the highlighter on the lexicon
helped a lot. I would get mad at myself if I went to look something up and
found it already colored yellow! and this seemed to help with memorization.
A parsing guide is very useful if you are doing this.
It took about a year to get to the point where I could read the GNT
comfortably without running to the lexicon every third or fourth word. I never used
the interlinear. It just worried me. I wanted to get a sense of how the
text should "sound" and was rewarded with just that. I felt that an interlinear
would interfere.
My advice: Carry the Greek NT everywhere and read it constantly (even when
waiting in line at the post office. Even if you don't know some of the
words). Stick it out long enough, and it will pay great dividends in the end.
True, this is hard work, but that doesn't scare us, right?
