The more normal translation would, of course, have been 'soul' or 'life.'
 I was not particularly putting any emphasis upon that point and did it
almost unconsciously (and rather groggily), but as a matter of fact I
don't see much distinction since I don't happen to subscribe to some
tri-partite division of man's being.  Of course, the question is not my
understanding of man's nature but that of the author.  Take it as an
error if you like, but don't read a great deal of significance into it.
