Response: Whoops I accidently sent my answer to Charles alone. Even if one takes Rev 21 literally I don't think it helps with 1 John 1:5 because the expression hO QEOS FWS ESTIN is in apposition to H AGGELIA which was heard from Christ.

What they heard about God was about his nature and his holiness. i.e. FWS which leads into a discussion about sin and how to live.

In Rev 21, this light (literal or not) comes from DOZA TOU QEOS EFWTISEV

God's glory actually shining, this is not God's nature, but his glory doing the lighting. Meaning it is his power doing the shining.
