You're absolutely right, Eddie. Carl and others have NOT contended that
the -QH forms CANNOT be understood as passive. Therefore simply finding
examples that may be understood or even must be understood as
semantically passive proves nothing in this debate. One would, as you
have stated, have to show that -QH forms CANNOT in any sensible way be
understood as semantically middle and that the traditionally middle
forms CANNOT be understood as semantically passive. Though I have some
serious questions about Carl's proposal, I think Charles has been
running in circles throughout this very long thread.
