Yes, as George observed the elision of the sigma is due to the sibilant
becoming an aspiration (now we see a rough breathing mark in Koine).
Classical, I believe was SEXW. David Allen Black's "Linguistics for
Students of the New Testament" on page 49 (I believe that is the reference)
goes into this linguistically.
We also see in Romans 1:13 SXW the aroist subjunctive of EXW, retaining the
sigma. And in Romans 5:2 ESXHKAMEN the perfect also retaining the sigma.
As with the reduplicated sigma in hISTHMI becoming a rough breathing mark,
so it is with the future of EXW, being of course hECW.
