>I do not like EXETE for two reasons: First, EXETE is
very doubtful textually (unfortunately P46 is missing
1:4)

<doug>
i hadn't looked at the textual support. i don't have a
textual apparatus with me but i can see that it is the
NA but not in BYZ or TR. so i can see why you might
doubt that it modifies ECETE (isn't CHI transliterated
with a C on B-Greek, X stands for XSI?). but wouldn't
a verb be implied here just like you say it is for
PISTIN if we were thinking of the deep structures of
the text (e.g., "faith you have in Christ...love you
have for the saints...")?

><Ron>
>Second, faith and love are equal objects of AKOUW.
[In any case, it is clearly adverbial, not
adjectival.]

<doug>
i don't disagree. paul and co. had heard about the
colossians faith AND love. but how does this rule out
the possibility that the next phrase only modifies the
previous phrase (whether it be ECETE or AGAPHN or
PISTIS KAI AGAPHN, etc.)?

and how is it clearly adverbial? what "rule" dictates
this? i have asked the question about prepositional
phrases (not just prepositions) on this list before
and i have yet to see a good treatment on determining
the function of prepositional phrases in any grammar
(the best that i've seen is young's intermediate greek
grammar). perhaps you can point me to any sources you
use to determine the function of prepositional
phrases. thanks!

><Ron>
>Leave off all of verse 3 except the first word, and
leave out all of verse 4 and you have "I give thanks
because of..." This still seems to make the most
sense overall.

<doug>
i guess i could see this. but would you say that paul
and co. are giving thanks because of the hope OR as a
response to hearing about their faith and love? or is
it BOTH (both as a response to hearing of their faith
and love AND because of the hope)? what is paul giving
thanks for? could not their faith and love which
prompted paul's giving thanks for them when he prays
be something (i.e., the faith and love) that happens
because of the hope which is laid up in heaven FOR
THEM?
