Hi All,
I understand that the word "charakter" can be defined in a general way from context of the uses in and out of Scripture. I would disagree however, that this word used only once in the NT, could be understood well enough to develop a specific Theology. There are many who use this verse to prove the trinity. Others believe it helps them prove The Father and Son are the same person (Apostolic). My belief is that this can not be properly so, because the "meaning" of the "greek" word charakter is not clearly known to us. More specifically, if we can not interpret from Thayer or others that "instrument" or "the exact stamp or impression" mean a specific Theology, how can we say that we know what it means?
How could Thayer or anyone else define it other than to seek the context of the uses found in history. Since the uses are limited, and most are outside of Scripture and not even in the same period of time., can we say what this NT writer meant? Even Thayer offers several possible meanings and is carefull not to interpret any particular slant on the meaning.
I guess my question is: can we say what the writer of Hebrews meant by "charakter"? I appreciate any light that can be given on this.
