In my modern Greek dictionary, every word starting with STAUR has a meaning listed that has something to do with cross. I'll give just one example; STAUROLEXO -> Crossword puzzle. This does not prove that in the NT STAUROS was cross shaped but is does make it more likely.(BTW, for STAUROS stake is also listed.)
