Dear Friends,
It seems to me, according to the Greek in this verse, that Lot tortured his
own soul. However, about half the translations I looked at render
EBASANIZEN as passive, "was tormented," or something like it.
Louw-Nida reports on the idiom YUXHN BASANIZO "...an idiom, literally 'to be
tormented in soul') to experience mental torment involving sorrow mixed with
anger - 'to experience anguish, to be tormented in one's heart.' [quoting 1
Pe 2:8] 'his righteous heart was tormented by their evil deeds.'"
I am wrestling a bit with the Louw-Nida statement because the only
proof-text they offer is 1Pe 2:8!
I am trying to figure out if the Greek text of this passage is expressing
that Lot was responsible for his own suffering or not. I am not trying to
suggest that a passive rendering of EBASANIZEN would give the final word on
Lot's responsibility. I am just trying to understand the Greek.
Thanks for your insights!
