Romans 16:17 provides a challenge as to whether a prepositional phrase (PARA THN DIDACHN) is adjectival or adverbial. If adjectival it refers to a doctrinal error, or if adverbial, the phrase modifies the participle POIOUNTAS, so that the causing of DICOSTASIAS KAI SKANDALA is contrary to the DIDACHN they had earlier received.
