An offlist message I received made me think I'd perhaps not made my  
point clear earlier.

I was saying that *in general* (not the specific META case) you may  
be able to rule out where a PP is attached based on the semantics of  
the PP but that that has nothing to do with syntax or with any  
characteristic of the case alone.

When I said that the hypothesis "may have merit" I meant there is  
nothing inherently wrong with a rule of the form "Preposition X with  
case Y is always adjectival". My point was that the hypothesis would  
have to be considered in the specific case of META and not just based  
on the choice of case.

Hope this clarifies what I was trying to say.
