Mitch, this is the standard construction for a present counterfactual (contrary-to-fact) condition: the protasis has an imperfect indicative, the apodosis an imperfect indicative with AN: So he says, "IF I were still trying to satisfy the wants of a human being, THEN I wouldn't be a servant of Christ."
