Hello folks,
I have been wondering for awhile about the phrase appearing in the beggining of the books of Mark and Luke; say Luke 3:3 which narrates the beginning of John's ministry and says,
''KERUSWN BAPTISMA METANOIaS EIS AFESIN AMARTION."
"Preaching baptism (of) Repentence for remission of sins;. . ."
Did the people who were baptized by John receive "remission for their sins" because they were baptized or at the point of repentence? Looking at the english the text can seem to go either way. Here I know that the "repentence" is in the genetive. Both baptism and repentence are nouns. But it looks like the primary point is that it is the repentence(signified by baptism) that a person receives remission of sins in this context. I can use some greek scholarly input here. Appreciate your replies,
