Ted:
ARA may expect a negative response. It is an
inferential particle that is a "marker of a tone of
suspense or impatience in interrogation, then with the
onus for a correct answer put on the addressee."
BDAG(Page 127).
Thayer defines it as,"marking an inferential question
to which a negative answer is expected." and "a
question to which an affirmative answer is expected,
in an interrogative apodosis."
Louw and Nida have it as "a marker of a negative
response to questions, usually implying anxiety or
impatience."
