Yes, you could say that GENHTAI functions as an aorist of EIMI here  
and that we have a perphrastic construction; on the other hand, it  
would not alter the sense at all if one understood PRWTEUWN as a ptc.  
used as predicate adjective; AUTOS is probably intensive here rather  
than a simple 3rd person pronoun: "so that he may himself be first- 
ranking ... "
