[B-Greek] 2 Cor 2:5

The thing which rather bothers me about the usual translation here is that hINA MH EPIBARW is taken as a parenthetical remark whereas in 1 Thess 2.9 (PROS TO MH EPIBARHSAI TINA hUMWN) the expression is only slightly different and it is not parenthetical. It could be read (changing the punctuation) hINA MH EPIBARW PANTAS hUMAS. Surely PROS + the articular inf in 1 Thess 2.9 is equally a final statement with the hINA + subj in 2 Cor 2.5. Could he here be saying in OUK EME LELUPHKEN, ALLA APO MEROUS that he has not suffered severe distress, but only TEMPORARY rather than "in some measure" he has caused distress (parenthetical) to all of you. It would then be understood as "If someone has caused distress, he has not distressed me (but only temporarily), in order that I may not burden all of you, sufficient to such is this punishment by the majority." I'm not wedded to this -- just thinking.

EI DE TIS LELUPHKEN, OUK EME LELUPHKEN, ALLA APO MEROUS, hINA MH
EPIBARW, PANTAS hUMAS.

I am tempted to translate this, 'But if anyone has caused grief, he has
not grieved me. Rather, in order that I should not be too severe [with
you], for a while he has grieved all of you.’ But since I've never seen
the verse translated or understood in this way, I'm wondering if I've
missed something. Aside from exegetical considerations, which may well
take us beyond the parameters of the list, have I missed something? That
is, should Paul have wished to convey the thought expressed in this
translation, would it be reasonable to suppose that he might have chosen
the words of 2:5 to convey it?

I have presupposed that, though he had written the letter mentioned in
2:3 'out of great distress and anguish of heart and through many tears'
(2:4), yet he had not been grieved by TIS (he had not experienced severe
outrage or humiliation, BDAG s.v. LUPEW 1). For APO MEROUS as 'for a
while', cf. Rom 15:24.

Many thanks,
Paul Tosleland
