We have been asked to make the following announcement:
Jan Hoogland has prepared a 117-page document offering a prescription
for quicker access to Biblical Greek texts to the amateur who cannot
afford the time to master the language in the standard way. He
insists that a serious student of the GNT can escape from the
misleading and questionable interpretations suggested by translations
by focusing upon what he calls “transformations” of the Greek words
and inflected forms in the Biblical text — exact equivalents of the
Greek word-forms aligned beneath the individual Greek words in the
manner of an interlinear translation. Obviously some instruction in
the mechanics of the Biblical Greek language is essential, and of
this Hoogland offers a minimalist introduction with pointers to
resources that can be accessed readily and without excessive
expenditure of time or effort: there are individual chapters on noun
cases, on verb tenses and voice (but not on moods) and on sentence-
structure. All this is illustrated with patterned short segments of
text from the GNT, each including the Greek text, the English
“transformations” of Greek word-forms aligned beneath the word-
forms, one standard English translation, and finally a paragraph
explaining how the “transformation” clarifies the meaning and — for
the adequately prepared student — corrects the misleading and
erroneous representation of the Greek text in the translation.
The text in all formats is copyrighted by Jan Hoogland, 2006. As long
as you do not change the content of the text or profit by it in any
financial way, you may share copies of the same with the author's
implicit blessing. This book is part of a larger work that is planned
ultimately to become the "Transformation of the Greek New Testament."
Though that goal is several years away, the author invites you to get
a headstart on the way to building your own Greek channel to the mind
by obtaining your own personal copy of this intermediate version today.
Those who wish to obtain a copy of Jan Hoogland’s booklet as an
attached zipped Word file, as a photocopy, or even on a CD-ROM,
should write directly to the author at hoogland at hawaii.rr.com.
