If you read verses five through ten you should see a pattern:

1John 1:5 KAI ESTIN hAUTH hH AGGELIA hHN AKHKOAMEN AP' AUTOU KAI
ANAGGELLOMEN hUMIN, hOTI hO QEOS FWS ESTIN KAI SKOTIA EN AUTWi OUK
ESTIN OUDEMIA. 6 EAN EIPWMEN hOTI KOINWNIAN ECOMEN MET' AUTOU KAI EN
TWi SKOTEI PERIPATWMEN, YEUDOMEQA KAI OU POIOUMEN THN ALHQEIAN: 7
EAN DE EN TWi FWTI PERIPATWMEN hWS AUTOS ESTIN EN TWi FWTI, KOINWNIAN
ECOMEN MET' ALLHLWN KAI TO hAIMA IHSOU TOU hUIOU AUTOU KAQARIZEI
hHMAS APO PASHS hAMARTIAS. 8 EAN EIPWMEN hOTI hAMARTIAN OUK ECOMEN,
hEAUTOUS PLANWMEN KAI hH ALHQEIA OUK ESTIN EN hHMIN. 9 EAN
hOMOLOGWMEN TAS hAMARTIAS hHMWN, PISTOS ESTIN KAI DIKAIOS, hINA AFHi
hHMIN TAS hAMARTIAS KAI KAQARISHi hHMAS APO PASHS ADIKIAS. 10 EAN
EIPWMEN hOTI OUC hHMARTHKAMEN, YEUSTHN POIOUMEN AUTON KAI hO LOGOS
AUTOU OUK ESTIN EN hHMIN.

Look at verse six:

6 EAN EIPWMEN hOTI KOINWNIAN ECOMEN MET' AUTOU KAI EN TWi SKOTEI
PERIPATWMEN,

YEUDOMEQA **KAI** OU POIOUMEN THN ALHQEIAN

then verse seven

7 EAN DE EN TWi FWTI PERIPATWMEN hWS AUTOS ESTIN EN TWi FWTI,

KOINWNIAN ECOMEN MET' ALLHLWN **KAI** TO hAIMA IHSOU TOU hUIOU
AUTOU KAQARIZEI hHMAS APO PASHS hAMARTIAS.

now verses eight, nine and ten

8 EAN EIPWMEN hOTI hAMARTIAN OUK ECOMEN,

hEAUTOUS PLANWMEN **KAI** hH ALHQEIA OUK ESTIN EN hHMIN.

9 EAN hOMOLOGWMEN TAS hAMARTIAS hHMWN,

PISTOS ESTIN KAI DIKAIOS, hINA AFHi hHMIN TAS hAMARTIAS **KAI**
KAQARISHi hHMAS APO PASHS ADIKIAS.

10 EAN EIPWMEN hOTI OUC hHMARTHKAMEN,

YEUSTHN POIOUMEN AUTON **KAI** hO LOGOS AUTOU OUK ESTIN EN hHMIN.

Each **KAI** joins two clauses in the apodosis, so the question is
answered by reading the text.
