Hey, my first post! Knowing full well that I am out-classed, I want to add
to the discussion of ancient Greek the results of the fall of Constantinople
in 1054 A.D. Many years ago, a history professor suggested in class that
with the fall of Byzantium, Byzantine scholars went west; thus a revival of
Greek in western Europe. I do not know the facts of this, but add it to the
hopper of the question "how do we know" if we understand ancient Greek as
the ancients understood it. Byzantium never lost its continuity in the East.
