Sorry for adding confusion to this discussion.  I just thought it
worthwhile 
to check ATR's comment, not that he translated TON CRONON  TOU FAINOMENOU 
ASTEROS  "the age of the star's  appearing."    I assume that Herod found
out 
from the Magi  the star first appeared two years earlier according to verse
16.   
I  personally favor the NAB "the time of the star's appearing."   Are  there

any objections to this rendering?  Perhaps Mt 2:7 has been  beaten to
death!!!
 
Carl W. Conrad, thanks for reminding me in a kind manner to be  more precise
