Without entering the debate on the Synoptic Problem, perhaps we could just
address the possibilities regarding the presence of the article. ATR simply
notes, "Some have held that Mark here calls Judas the primate among the
twelve. Rather he means to call attention to the idea that he was the one of the
twelve who did this deed." Seems like a simple and satisfying explanation.
Max and Mary write, ". . . class. that one (known to the reader) who was one
of, but in HGk simply partitive, one of" (154). Wallace agrees. "The article
thus belongs to the 'well-known' category as well" (233). Among his
illustrations, he cites Mark 14:10.
ATR lists a lengthy bibliography on the debate over the "primacy" of Judas
on page 1394 of his large grammar.
The mss. evidence may indicate a struggle with the presence of the article
for the same reasons felt by Webb.
