In other words, is the rendering "and the word
was divine" linguistically better than "and the word
was a god"?

In my years of reading, I've not noticed the following
translation, which I think demonstrates that theology
not only influences our thinking, it limits what we
would even consider.

The qualitative translation has the support as being
the most likely, but others are possible, such as...

"and the word was a God"

There is the assumption that if we take it indefinite,
we've somehow solved the theological questions at
hand.

To decide between "a god" or "a God" has no relation
to grammar/syntax/context.
