I don't have a sure answer to that one, but I'll hazard a guess. I wouldn't be surprised if it were a Briticism which may well be shared by the Aussies (Bruce was Aussie) and is also shared by Bostonians here in the US. Did you ever notice in speaches by Kennedy he says "Americer" rather than "America"?

Can anyone throw any light on that?
