Regarding the adversative function of KAI:
Here's an example from English that may shed light on this semantic
function:
One of my children says to me, "I meant to clean my room." (Or: "I meant to
be home by 10 p.m.," or "I meant to be nice to my sister," etc.)
I might reply: "And . . . ?"
With this reply, I would be using "and" in an adversative way, with about
the same force as "but." My point would be, "Whatever your intention, you
DIDN'T follow through."
