I thank the list for indluging me when waxing on theoro-praksis. I am
reading a book in preparation for our summer BH ulpan and ran across
an interesting, common sense couple of sentences.
"Even though it is very helpful to make some use in the classroom of
the student's first language, the class must be conducted at least 90
percent of the time in the target language. ... Again, when the first
language is being spoken, acquisition of the target language is not
taking place." (Blaine Ray and Contee Seely, Fluency through TPR
storytelling, 4th edition, 2004)
Couldn't've said it better.
(class comprehension and enjoyment are implied between the lines.)
While we've done Greek ulpans 4 hr/wk for 2 semesters and 12 hr/wk for
3 weeks, maybe next summer we can try our first intensive 20/wk for
Greek (--120 class hours in six weeks). That ought'o tucker out a
teacher.
