In history, the Gnostics, Montanus, and Muhammad all had their own claim on
PARAKLHTOS. The Gnostics (Ptolemaeus > Valentinus) consider Paracletus to
be a duodecad emanation or one of the 12 coming from Anthropos and Ecclesia,
and belonging to the 30 Aeons that made up the Pleroma. Around the middle of
the 2nd century, Montanus professed that he was the promised Paraclete and
in the 7th century Muhammad though the Christians had changed the texts that
proved him to be the Paraclete.
In the NT, both Jesus and the Holy Spirit are PARAKLHTOS. In the Apostolic
Fathers, 3X:
2 Clem. 6:9 "Who shall be our PARAKLHTOS, if we are not found having holy
and righteous works."
Barnabas 20.2 PARAKLHTOI of the rich (in context of a vice list)
Didache 5.2 of the rich PARAKLHTOI (in context of a vice list), --Barnabas
and Diache are parallel passages, discussing the two ways. So, all passages
in the Apostolic Fathers can conform to Doug's rendering of Lawyer, except
for the fact that BAGD says that "lawyer" is a rare connotation for the word
and too specialized, though this is how the Latin theologians and
translators took it.
