Shalom Alan,
I would paraphrase your question in order to get a wider perspective:
"(as though) . . . I've just finished two years of German study using
grammar book A and grammar book B, what should I do next? Would sentence
diagramming help?"
It might help a tiny-weeny bit in becoming sensitive to structural
ambiguities or complications. It may help you in describing structure, but I
suspect that you will have exhausted most of its benefit after working
through a chapter's worth of text. It is not the door into the language.
Put yourself in the German position. ("diagram a German story" is not the
expected next step.)
What would you do next? Use the language. Read, of course, speak, of course,
listen, of course (lots of listening), write (wouldn't hurt, but it is often
the last step and requires reflection to be done well). Use the language
lots.
