There's a nice post by Richard Rhodes this morning on the Better
Bibles Blog on the importance of getting the nuance right when
dealing with the near synonyms for judgment of a proposition's truth-
value: hUPOLAMBANW, NOMIZW, DOKEW, PISTEUW, and OIOMAI. It's to be
found at
http://tinyurl.com/nxdez
Louw & Nida §31.29 list these words but don't differentiate them as a
good thesaurus would English words. BDAG endeavors to get at the
nuanced sense of each of these words, but I haven't noted any attempt
to differentiate them from each other. What Richard writes at the
above URL is focused upon translation questions, but of course
accurate translation must necessarily be grounded in clear
understanding of the precise meaning of the original text.
