In addition to KW's suggestions, consider reading the texts in which
the Greek fathers were deeply immersed, so that quotations from it and
allusions to it permeate their writings: the Septuagint. Maybe start
with some narrrative that might not be so familiar to you that an
English translation will be right on the top of your head, such as Bel
and the Dragon or Wisdom of Sirach. If you want a parallel English
version, I think Hendrickson probably still has the Brenton LXX.
